Planning your wedding in Marbella: what to consider

Marbella has a way of making a wedding feel effortless: warm Mediterranean light, villas above the sea, a relaxed coastal rhythm. But a destination wedding still asks for a few good decisions. Here is what we always share with couples planning their wedding in Marbella.

Why Marbella?

Few places combine so many settings within a short drive: private villas with sea views, five-star hotels, beach clubs, fincas in the hills and the whitewashed lanes of the Old Town. Couples come for the exclusivity and the lifestyle — and many stay for several days, turning the wedding into a holiday with the people they love.

When to get married in Marbella

The Costa del Sol enjoys mild weather for much of the year, so the right season depends on the feeling you want.

  • Late spring and early autumn — softer light, comfortable temperatures and a calmer coast. A favourite with our couples.
  • High summer — long evenings and a lively atmosphere. Plan the ceremony later in the day and keep shade and water close for your guests.
  • Winter — quieter, more intimate and often bright. Perfect for small weddings and elopements.

For international couples, a legal civil wedding in Spain is usually only possible when one partner is a Spanish citizen or has been resident in Spain for some time. That is why most destination couples sign the legal paperwork at home and celebrate with a symbolic ceremony in Marbella — complete freedom over the setting, the words and the timing.

Requirements change and depend on your nationality — always confirm the current rules with your planner, venue or consulate.

“The best wedding days are the ones where the plan quietly disappears and you simply get to be there.”

Choosing your venue

Think about the experience before the decor. Where do you want to be standing when you say yes — facing the sea, under olive trees, in a garden at sunset? Then consider the practical side:

  • Is there an indoor or covered alternative if the wind picks up?
  • Where will the sun be at the time of your ceremony?
  • Are getting ready, ceremony and dinner in one place, or will everyone travel between locations?
  • Can guests stay on site or nearby?

Guests travelling from abroad

Málaga–Costa del Sol Airport is less than an hour’s drive from Marbella, with direct flights from much of Europe; Gibraltar is around an hour away. Share travel tips early, consider a shuttle for the wedding day and, if your families speak different languages, plan a welcome that includes everyone.

It is one of the reasons we work in English, Spanish, Dutch and Danish — so every guest feels looked after, including in front of the camera.

Planning around the light

Light is everything in photography. In midsummer the sun sets after 9 pm in Marbella, so a ceremony in the early evening and portraits during golden hour make for the most beautiful images. Midday sun is harsh: if your ceremony is early, we look for open shade and plan portraits for later.

Multi-day celebrations

Many weddings in Marbella begin with a welcome dinner and end with a relaxed brunch. These moments are part of your story too — often the most natural photographs come from the evening before, when everyone is arriving and the excitement is building.

A sample photography timeline

Every venue and season is different — we build your timeline together during planning.

Key takeaways

  • Choose your season for the light and the feeling you want.
  • Most international couples marry legally at home and celebrate symbolically in Marbella.
  • Pick a venue with a plan B and think about where the sun will be.
  • Schedule portraits for golden hour.
  • Consider multi-day coverage to tell the whole story.
